Events like these are like pre-quake shocks that warn of things to come. And I’m glad for this crisis for several reasons: 1) resetting priorities – when hard times come we reassess what is truly important, 2) checking our foundation – are we resting in God’s hands, or trusting in world systems?, 3) it is evidence of God’s mercy – He could easily let everything fall without allowing for repentance… but times like these are a blessing. God is like a schoolteacher gently admonishing students who are daydreaming or not on task. “Wake up. Get your eyes on me. Your thoughts are far away. Why are you afraid? What are you trusting?”
The thought that Christians are fearful, a point brought up by one of the callers, is telling and pitiful. Dr. Brown, you touched on the topic of Americans worshiping a Messiah of comfort and prosperity… and how un-biblical that is. Jesus did not promise us a rose garden of comfort and prosperity. He promised that we would suffer as he suffered: to be mocked, threatened, beaten, abused, falsely accused, jailed, and even killed. It’s no wonder they’re afraid. Peace comes from God, not from our pocketbooks and stock portfolios.

He gives us this time for repentance, but also he gives us this time to prepare. It is almost a generation since the land of Israel was given back to the Jewish people, and you know what that means

This crisis is unfortunate but its coming was completely predictable. ( The Financial Sense website has been following this upcoming disaster for years. ) You can’t base an economy on ever increasing amounts of debt without the income or savings to back it up. The bailout that just passed will be highly inflationary, just as the artificially low interest rate environment that the Fed has created over the last several years has been inflationary. Everyone around the world is going to pay for this through an ever higher cost of living, and the worst is yet to come. A recession/depression is a healthy market response to excess and malinvestment and it is the one thing that the government and the Fed have been trying to avoid like the plague.
Whatever happened to living within our means? Whatever happened to sharing what we have with others? Michael is absolutely right when he says that we have been worshiping a messiah of comfort and prosperity. The irony in all of this is it is this very same mentality that has led the economy into the mess its in now. If it doesn’t change, it will eventually lead into a hyperinflationary depression that will make the 30′s look like hiccup by comparision.
The bible tells us the value of saving for a rainy day, and of sharing what we have with others. We have done neither, and now we are paying for these mistakes in two ways. 1) Households sinking further and further into debt which will be paid for out of future production. 2) Allowing the government to take over the role of helper to the less fortunate, which continues to be paid for by debasement of the currency (inflation which increases the cost of living) and an ever accelerating rate.
Both of these processes are continuing and will lead to ruin if not stopped very soon. My advice to anyone is to live within your means and keep your savings/investments in hard assets that act as a hedge against inflation. Lastly, take a step of courage and give to those who need help. Jesus spoke about money more than any other topic while he was with us on this earth for a reason. To get us to let go of it so it doesn’t become our god. The worship of the god of money leads to poverty and bondage!

Marcus,
It means that we must do like Joseph and pull together with your bretheren. Stockpile items, goods, that is what we are doing. GET OUT OF DEBT if you are in it.
Make sound judgement, you are given this time to prepare, and you might not be preparing for yourself; someone else might reap the benefits with what you and your brothers are doing. This is why my license does not have the EID card in it.
(I know I am dropping clues here, pray and the Helper will help you to see)
The 70 years is almost complete, take advantage of this before it is too late and you cannot afford to start.
One more thing, look at the Treaty of Lisbon, signed in December of ’07; I am tired and going to bed, but I wanted to leave you with some information because I do care about the people on this site.
October 8th, 2008 @ 11:40 pm
Ryan,
So you believe that 70 years from when Israel became a country, in the year 2018, the Lord will return to the Earth?
October 9th, 2008 @ 7:24 am
Luke 21: “Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
A generation is 70 years calculated, yes, Israel became a nation in 1948. I also look at the birth pangs as far as all teh sparadic earthquakes and famine around the earth now; I also look at the treaty of lisbon; but as I said on Dr. brown’s show when it concerned the anti-christ; just pay attention to the times, do not try to focus on individuals; we know the season is near, that is all we need to know.
Not to be an alarmist, cause I am definately not. I think it is best to prepare; before things get too expensive or out of hand.

Im trying to listen to the 10:03 podcast, havent been able to.
Can you help me with that.
Thanks

Ryan,
I see no scriptural support for a generation being seventy years. Can you supply this from the Word? Also, I do not see in the Word that the fig tree is a specific reference to Israel and have even written about this subject. Again, can you supply something clear from the Word on this?
I absolutely see massive significance in the modern State of Israel, but I can’t agree with your scriptural reasoning here. So, can you supply something of substance on this?

John,
The link seems to be ok in the post, perhaps it’s an individual issue of yours. Have you tried downloading the file via iTunes or the podcast feed? (feed url: http://feeds.feedburner.com/LineOfFireRadio)

I got some of my information from authors and commentaries. Author’s like Joseph Good and Ed Chumney. The 70 years is based on Psalm 90:10 (‘The days of our years are threescore years and ten’) or Psalm 90:10 (‘The days of our years are seventy’)

Ryan,
A lifetime is different than a generation in Scripture, as you probably know, and nowhere in the Bible is a generation ever represented as being 70 years. The common biblical figure is 40 years, which is why some misguided prophecy teachers were expecting the Lord’s return in 1988!
In any case, it’s best not to try to date set based on Israel’s restored statehood. Instead, we should recognize that the pace of God’s working on the earth is accelerating and give ourselves to His purposes accordingly.
October 10th, 2008 @ 6:42 pm
40 years is not a generation period, it is a probation/punishment period. 10 is a number of completion, etc. I know I will not see the fruit from the seeds that I have planted; but believe me when I say that I love you guys and I hope that you will take it to heart.
I do agree that it is not best to set a date like Rosh HaShonah September 10, 2018; because the theme is to be ready; ready yourself by purifying your walk as a bride/groom would for her/his spouse (Yeshua).

Ryan,
Scripture please, OK?
40 is used in the Bible to speak of a generation, not 70. 40 has other meanings as well, but in terms of years, it’s the biblical figure for a generation. Dig a little in the Word and you’ll see.
October 10th, 2008 @ 7:15 pm
Dr. Brown,
Please provide a reference for 40 years in the Word where it says that it is to mean a generational period.

Returning to the business of the financial crisis, my feeling is that the lawyer who rang in knew what she was talking about — and (assuming she was not a barefaced liar) the fact that she’d been a registered Democrat all her life would refute any accusation of right-wing point-scoring. Over here (the UK), we just hear the media’s mantra of “greedy fat-cats & evil markets/Capitalism, etc.” (greedy bankers were certainly a part of the problem, but at best only half the picture). Here‘s an article which tends to jibe well the observations of the lady who called in. …Not observations we’ll hear anytime soon on the BBC, though…

Ryan,
Re: a generation, technically speaking, it generally refers to the time difference between someone in the prime of their life and the birth of their child, so in reality, it is closer to 20-30 years. But the Scriptures often speak of the generation that died in the wilderness — referring to a forty year period — and that is one of the guiding principles for the “generation equals forty years” concept.

Regards to the “birthpangs of Messiah” Would not the opening of the first 5 seals be the birth pangs perhaps? Considering the massive shaking that happens on the earth when they are opened. And the opening of the 6th one be the actual ‘birth’ so to speak (i speak of the rapture here), especially considering the sudden entry of a large crowd in after the opening of the 6th seal and right before the 7th one is opened. Considering the massive shaking of the heavens that occurs when the 6th seal opened this would seem to be the case. Also take into consideration Rev 12 which seems to be a sort of parentheses of the events that have taken place in Rev 6 to 14.
The current market problem is a greed issue. People stopped being as risk adverse as they should have, turned derivatives into bets and the house of cards had to fall at some point. As christians we should not get alarmed. But we should be aware that the way the world is becoming increasingly more global with all of the governance apparatus the West has built to rule the rest (which for them seems fine because it profits the industrialists among the rest of the world), i.e. UN, IMF, World Bank etc. The rise of The EU and the re-occuring plans to make it more of a superstate should raise flags that the coming of the Lord is near. But that means we should stand tall and be responsible workers not lazy and beating one another.

Michael,
Just like the 40 days and 40 nights on the ark, it was a probation type period, just like the ex-egyptians had to wait 40 years; it was a probabtion type period.
I fully love your input, but I have to disagree with your position. I do truly admire your knowledge, but I really believe this is truth. Ask Him yourself, 2 witnesses is all it takes
October 16th, 2008 @ 6:27 pm
Michael,
Even the 40 days and 40 nights was a probation type period, just like the 40 years that was imposed on the hebrews (ex-egyptians); the majority were probably in their 20-30s, (because of the working conditions it would have been hard to live out a full life due to the work they did and how they were treated while there) add the probation period of 40 years, and they would have been 60-70 years old.
I appreciate your responses, but I really believe our Father takes the number 40 as a tribulatory association.
God Bless!
Shalom

Ryan,
Forty also refers to testing (as does ten) many times in the Bible, but as stated — and as you can find through further study; time does not permit a detailed response here — forty is the normative time frame for a biblical generation. In any case, this much is sure: seventy is NOT the biblical time frame for a generation and can NOT be used to set a date for the second coming relative to Israel’s restored statehood in 1948.

One Hebrew word for “generation” is ??? (DOR), corresponding to the Aramaic dar. (Da 4:3, 34) ??? (DOR) comes from a root verb meaning “stack in a circle” or “move around” (Eze 24:5; Ps 84:10) and thus has a basic underlying meaning of “circle.” The related word dur means “ball.” (Isa 22:18) The Greek equivalent is ge·ne·a?, from a root meaning “be born.” This Hebrew word ??? (DOR) is used 167 times in the Hebrew Bible and usually translated as “generation”. While the Hebrew word ??? and the English word “generation” are similar in meaning, it is important to understand the differences in order to have a clearer picture of the authors understanding of the word which may impact how the passage is understood.
A generation is time from one birth to the birth of the next generation.
Length……. When the term “generation” is used with reference to the people living at a particular time, the exact length of that time cannot be stated, except that the time would fall within reasonable limits. These limits would be determined by the life span of the people of that time or of that population. The life span of the ten generations from Adam to Noah averaged more than 850 years each. (Ge 5:5-31; 9:29) But after Noah, man’s life span dropped off sharply. Abraham, for example, lived only 175 years. (Ge 25:7) Today, much as it was in the time of Moses, people living under favorable conditions may reach 70 or 80 years of age. Moses wrote: “In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; and if because of special mightiness they are eighty years, yet their insistence is on trouble and hurtful things; for it must quickly pass by, and away we fly.” (Ps 90:10) Some few may live longer, but Moses stated the general rule. Moses himself, who lived 120 years, was an exception, as were his brother Aaron (123 years), Joshua (110 years), and some others whose strength and vitality were unusual.—De 34:7; Nu 33:39; Jos 24:29.
In order to read the text correctly we must be willing to learn the unique styles of writing employed by the original authors, learn how the authors thought and percieved their world and the words of the text must be interpreted according to the authors understanding. Our own beliefs, prejudices and preconcieved theologies can cause a biaseness when reading the text eliminating the discovery of truth.
Shalom
